ABOUT THE ARTIST
ABDULISMS is a British-born Iraqi-Irish multidisciplinary artist and cultural producer whose practice operates at the intersection of photography, moving image, publishing, radio, and installation. His work is driven by an exploration of how images, archives, and acts of cultural production shape collective memory, identity, and resistance, with a specific focus on Iraq and its global diasporas.
His artistic focus lies in challenging inherited and dominant media narratives by foregrounding the “everyday” focusing on ordinary landscapes, rituals, and encounters to reveal the complexity of lived experience. ABDULISMS approaches his practice as a form of cultural infrastructure, seeking to create spaces for dialogue, exchange, and collective authorship. This is evidenced by his roles as the Co-founder and Creative Director of Maqam Books and as the host of IRAQAFELLA Radio on Radio AlHara. Between 2020 and 2024, he further extended this practice into curation, serving as the Curator for South West Asia and North Africa Programming at Kunstraum.
