The SEE DJERBA Audience Care and Art Mediation Training prepares participants to welcome visitors, accompany artworks in public space, and create thoughtful, accessible, and respectful encounters between audiences, sites, and artworks.
The training is grounded in SEE DJERBA’s community-based model, where learning happens through workshops, exchange, observation, and direct engagement with the exhibition environment. It is designed for local participants who want to contribute to the festival while learning to speak about contemporary art.
Participants reflect on how to guide audiences and create a positive atmosphere around installations and performances. They also develop skills in art and cultural mediation, as well as basic production support. Through the training, participants understand the festival’s curatorial approach, the role of contemporary media art in public space, and the importance of site-specific interpretation. They will be able to welcome a variety of visitors, explain artworks in local terms, and encourage dialogue without overexplaining or closing down interpretation. Participants learn how to notice audience needs, including accessibility, orientation, comfort, and respectful conduct around artworks and heritage sites.
Short presentations will be paired with group discussion, role-play, and walk-through exercises so that participants practice real-world situations rather than only discussing them. All artists, their approaches, and their artworks are presented before meeting them on-site. The training includes an introduction to light and media technologies used by artists and a critical cross-check of knowledge about the sites, their histories, and values. Also, translating art terms from French or English into Tunisian is part of the program.
